This article follows the Library of Congress in using the time period «China Diamond Painting» in choice to «porcelain diamond painting«, although «porcelain» is preferred to «china» for the fabric being painted. The material resembles the shell in its glossy floor. Digital cylinder printing is when a machine directly lays ink onto a curved surface that usually is the wall of an object that has a circular cross part, and a relentless, tapered, or variable diameter. In many of the processes, the ink or toner does not permeate the substrate, as does conventional ink, but forms a thin layer on the floor which may be additionally adhered to the substrate by a fuser fluid with thermal (toner) or ultraviolet nocuring (ink).

Farnsworth studied printmaking on the San Francisco Art Institute with Richard Graf, Kathan Brown, Gerald Gooch, Bob Fried, and Gordon Kluge, supplementing his courses by concurrently studying chemistry and printmaking at Laney College in Oakland and lithography at the Art Institute of Chicago.
